Truyền Tâm Ấn hay Phá cái Nghi cuối cùng ?

Ananda asked Kashyapa : * What was it that thou hast received from the Buddha besides the robe and the bowl ?* Kashyapa called: '0 Ananda.' Ananda replied: *Ay.' Thereupon Kashyapa said : ' Wilt thou take down the flag- pole at the gate T Upon receiving this order, a spiritual illumination came over the mind of Ananda, and the ' Seal of Spirit ' was handed over by Mahakashyapa to this junior disciple.

Ngài Ânanda cật vấn Ngài Đại Ca Diếp: "Tôn Giả đã nhận được gì từ đức Thế Tôn ngoài y và bát? " Ngài Ca Diếp gọi "Này Ananada". Ngài Ananda trả lời: "Dạ". Ngài Ca Diếp nói tiếp: "Hiền Giả hãy hạ cái cột cờ ngoài cổng xuống". Ngay lúc đó, tuệ giác chợt bừng sáng mãnh liệt trong trí của Ngài Ananda và Ngài Ca Diếp đã truyền trao Tâm Ấn cho ngài Ananda.
Muốn hiểu rõ lý do tại sao Ngài Ananda hỏi như thế thì cần phải đọc và suy gẫm lại lời dạy của đấng Đại Thiện Giác.
The Brahmaraja came to a congregation of Buddhists on the Mount of the Holy Vulture, and offering a bouquet of pala9a (?) flowers to the Buddha, prostrated himself on the ground and reverently asked the Master to preach the Dharma for the benefit of sentient beings. The Buddha ascended the seat, and brought forth the flowers before the congregation of gods and men. But none of them could comprehend the meaning of this act on the part of the Buddha, except the venerable Mahakashyapa, who softly smiled and nodded. Then exclaimed the Buddha : '* I am the owner of the Eye of the Good Law, which is Nirvana, the Mind, the mystery of reality and non-reality, and the gate of transcendental Dharma. I now hand it over to Mahakashyapa.''

Nhóm Bà La Môn đến dự đại hội chúng tại Núi Linh Thứu, dâng một bó hoa (không rõ hoa gì), và lạy đức Phật sát đất rồi thỉnh cầu Ngài từ bi giảng pháp mầu cho chúng sanh. Đức Phật đến ghế ngồi và đưa bó hoa ra phía trước hội chúng của chư thiên và người. Không ai hiểu được dụng ý của Phật ngoại trừ ngài Trưởng Lão Ca Diếp mỉm cười và gật đầu nhẹ.
Đức Phật tuyên bố: "Ta có pháp nhãn thanh tịnh bao gồm Niết Bàn, sự huyễn nhiệm của Thực Tại và Không Thực Tại, cánh cửa của các Pháp lưu chuyển. Nay ta trao lại cho Maha Ca Diếp".
